How To Generate an API Key In Mailchimp

If you want to set up an integration between your website and your MailChimp account, chances are high that you'll need to generate an API key within your MailChimp account.

Users with Manager permissions  can generate and view their own API keys within their your MailChimp account. Users with Admin permissions can also see API keys for other account users.

Let's retrieve this information from your Mailchimp account:

  1. Login to your Mailchimp account, and select your profile photo in the top right hand corner to reveal details about your account.
  2. Select Account & billing
  3. Now select the drop-down arrow next to Extras, and you'll see an option for API keys
  4. Scroll down the page until you reach the section titled Your API keys account
  5. Copy an existing API key or click the Create A Key button.
  6. Name your key descriptively, so you know what application uses that key.
  7. Click Generate Key.
  8. Once Mailchimp generates your key, click Copy Key to Clipboard. Save your key someplace secure–you won’t be able to see or copy it again. If you lose this key, you’ll need to generate a new key and update any integration that uses it.
  9. Click Done.

    Things to Remember:

    • You’ll only be able to see the full API key immediately after you generate it. After that, you’ll only see the name you’ve given it and its first 4 digits, so save it somewhere safe.

    • For your security, API keys are no longer accessible after creation. If you lose a key, you’ll need to generate a new key and update any integration that uses it.
