How to add links to a page

Within content areas on a page, you can create links to other pages, photos, documents or an email box on your site or to external websites

In this guide we will cover:


How to create a link to another page on your website, or an external website

(on websites built from 2024 onwards)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Enter some text within this section, then highlight the text that you want to become the link. Next, select the link icon to reveal a pop-up where you will set the URL. 
  4. Type or paste in the Link URL field, and select the green tick icon [] to save your changes. 
    Note: 
    - If you are directing visitors to the page to an internal page within your website, you do not need to toggle the Open in a new tab to the on position.
    - If you are directing visitors offsite to an external website, best practice is to toggle the Open in a new tab to the on position.

  5. When  you have finished making edits to the page, select the Save button at the top of the page and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.
  6. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, goes to the correct internal page or external website.

How to create a link for people to send you an email

(on websites built from 2024 onwards)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Enter some text within this section, then highlight the text that you want to become the link e.g.: Get in touch. Next, select the link icon to reveal a pop-up where you will set the URL. 
  4. Type or paste in mailto: then an email address e.g.: mailto:clientservices@tomahawk.co.nz Make sure that there are no spaces. Then  select the green tick icon [] to save your changes. You won't be able to add in an email subject or body text.
  5. When  you have finished making edits to the page, select the Save button at the top of the page and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.
  6. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, opens a new email, and the email is received in the set inbox.


How to create a link for people to call you

(on websites built from 2024 onwards)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Enter some text within this section, then highlight the text that you want to become the link e.g.: Get in touch: +64 9 522 2333 Next, select the link icon to reveal a pop-up where you will set the URL.
  4. Type or paste in tel: then the phone number e.g.: tel:+6495222333 Make sure that there are no spaces. Then  select the green tick icon [] to save your changes. 
  5. When  you have finished making edits to the page, select the Save button at the top of the page and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.
  6. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, an opens a calling app on desktop, or enters the phone number to call on mobile.

How to create a link to another page on your website, or an external website

(for websites built prior to 2019)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Select the text in the content section that you want to become the link (e.g. Get in touch). From the toolbar click the link icon and a new link pop-up window will open.
  4. A link pop-up box will appear, opened to the Link Info tab. Here you will need to complete fields for:
    - Link Type:  Ensure this is set at URL.
    - Protocol: To link to an internal page on the website, or to an external website, set this as <other>
    - URL field: In this field you will enter the URL of the page you want to point people to. If it is an internal page, you only need the URL after your domain name. So in the example below for www.tomahawk.co.nz/contact you only need to paste in /contact
    If you are pointing people to an external website, you will need the full URL, including https:// e.g.: https:// www.tomahawk.co.nz/contact 


  5. If you are linking to a page on an external website, you will need to select the Target tab, then select New Window (_blank) so that you when clicked on the link will open in a new tab.
  6. Select OK, then select Save at the top of the page to save your changes and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.

  7. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, goes to the correct internal page or external website.

How to create a link to an image or document on your website

(for websites built prior to 2019)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Type or highlight the text in the content section that when clicked on will open an image or document in full screen.
  4. From the toolbar click the link icon and a link pop-up window will open.
  5. In the link pop-up box, you will need to complete fields for:
    - Link Type:  Ensure this is set as URL.
    - Protocol: To link to an internal page on the website, or to an external website, set this as <other>
    - URL field: Click the Browse Server button and the File Manager window will open where you can select, or upload, an image or PDF from a folder or subfolder. Double click the image or document you want to sit behind the link and this will populate the URL field with the location of the file for you:
  6. It is best practice when creating a link to an image or document for this to open in a new tab. Select the Target tab, then select New Window (_blank) so that you when clicked on the link will open in a new tab.
  7. Select OK, then select Save at the top of the page to save your changes and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.
  8. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, opens the correct image or document, and that this opens in a new tab if set.


How to create a link for people to send you an email

(for websites built prior to 2019)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, navigate to the General section of the website, then select Pages.  Select the Page you want to work with by clicking on the name of the Page. 
  2. Navigate to the tab and section that contains a Rich Text Editor, you will see a toolbar at the top of this section that contains a link icon [🔗].
  3. Type or highlight the text in the content section that when clicked on will open an email using the inbox of the visitor to your website e.g.: Contact or clientservices@tomahawk.co.nz
  4. From the toolbar click the link icon and a link pop-up window will open.
  5. In the link pop-up box, you will need to complete fields for:
    - Link Type:  Ensure this is set as Email.
    - Email Address: Add in the email address that you would like to receive the email to be delivered to.
    - Message Subject: Add in an email subject line that will help to make it clear that the email came from your website, and even the page name.
    - Message Body: This is a free text field where you can set text to help collect information, but is not compulsory to complete.
  6. Select OK, then select Save at the top of the page to save your changes and you will be directed back to the Pages menu.
  7. Always check the website's front end once you have saved your changes to make sure the link appears and when clicked, opens a new email, and the email is received in the set inbox.
