How to add a PDF attachment to a page

Adding downloadable documents to your website is a great way to provide detailed content for your customers. A PDF for example can sit behind a CTA button, or hyperlinked texst within your page content, and can be created in a few easy steps. 

In this guide we will cover:


How to add a PDF into page content: Hyperlink (for websites built after 2019)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, then navigate to the General Menu and Select Pages. Select the name of the page you would like to work with to open it. Let's work with the Weddings Page, nested under the Parent Page of Occasions, as an example and add a downloadable wedding guide to the page.

  2. In the Content tab, add some text e.g.: DOWNLOAD OUR WEDDING PACK which we are then going to highlight to become a hyperlink. A visitor to the page will then click on the link which will open the wedding pack as a PDF.

  3. Next, select the Folder icon () in the toolbar.

  4. Selecting the folder icon will opens File Manager, allowing you to choose a PDF that will sit behind this text as a link. You can also upload a PDF file to File Manager at this time the same way you add images: How to add images to the file manager. Once the file you need has uploaded, select the PDF until the file turns blue, then select Choose at the top left of the window.

  5. You'll notice that the highlight text has now turned blue, confirming that you have successfully linked the document to this text. You can now select Save at the top left of the page to publish your changes, and view these on the front end.

  6. This will show on the front end as underlined text. There are options within the Rich Text Editor to help your hyperlinked text stand out more, you can read more about all text formatting options in The Content tab section on our guide on How to create a new page.
    In the example below you can see formatting options such as making the text bold, centre aligning the text, and applying a different Heading style.

  7. The final step is to select the hyperlinked text to ensure that your PDF automatically opens.

How to add a PDF into page content: CTA Button (for websites built after 2019)

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, the navigate to the General Menu and Select Page. Select the name of the page you would like to work with to open it. Let's work with the Weddings Page, nested under the Parent Page of Occasions, as an example and add a downloadable wedding guide to the page.

  3. Next, select the Link icon (Link icon) to open a pop-up where you will enter the URL for the PDF. As you are not able to copy a URL for the PDF file from File Manager, you will need to step through all of the Hyperlink steps above, so that you can open the PDF in a tab of your browser, then copy the URL. Make sure that you only copy the website URL from http onwards, as when a PDF opens Adobe Acrobat in Chrome for example the URL will be much longer. e.g.: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://inspiretheme.tomahawk.co.nz/library/files/pdf-test/Wedding-Pack.pdf

  4. Paste the URL into the Link URL field, then toggle on Open in a new tab until the toggle turns green. Select the green tick button to save your changes.

  5. The last step is update the text from being hyperlinked to a CTA button. To do this, highlight the text and select the drop-down arrow on the option for Headings. Scroll down until you see the option for Button, and select this.

  6. You can now select Save at the top left of the page to publish your changes, and view these on the front end.

  7. This will show on the front end as a coloured CTA button with your text inside. There are options within the Rich Text Editor to help your hyperlinked text stand out more, you can read more about all text formatting options in The Content tab section on our guide on How to create a new page.
    In the example below you can see formatting options such as making the text bold, centre aligning the text, and applying different template styles. 


  8. The final step is to select the hyperlinked text to ensure that your PDF automatically opens.

How to add a PDF into page content For websites built prior to 2019

  1. Login to the CMS using your Username and Password, the navigate to the General Menu and Select Page. Select the name of the page you would like to work with to open it. 

  2. Highlight the text you would like to be linked to the PDF, then select the Link icon in the toolbar of the Rich Text Editor. Link icon in the Rich Text Editor
  3. A pop-up will display for you to select a file to sit behind the text. Click the 'Browse Server' button, which will take you to the File Manager to select a PDF. Link iconSelect a file from File Manager
  4. If your file has not yet been uploaded into the File Manager, you can add this now, by clicking the icon that looks like a floppy disk with a green plus sign. This opens up your computer documents, and you can select the required document and click open to import it into the File Manager. Upload a new file to File Manager
  5. Once you have located the file you need, double click on it to select this to be hyperlinked to your text. 
  6. You will see that the URL feild is now populated with the link to the file. You can now select OK.
  7. At the top of the page, select Save to save your changes.
  8. The final step is to select the hyperlinked text to ensure that your PDF automatically opens.

💡 Things to Remember:

  • You can hyperlink text within any page that has a Rich Text Editor.

  • You can create hyperlinked text, a CTA Button using the Heading option, or two different styles of CTA Buttons using the Templates option.
  • If you are using the CTA Button options, remember that you will need to follow the steps to create a Hyperlink first and publish this, so that you can copy the URL to use in the URL field.
  • Make sure that you only copy the website URL from http onwards, as when a PDF opens Adobe Acrobat in Chrome for example the URL will be much longer. e.g.: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://inspiretheme.tomahawk.co.nz/library/files/pdf-test/Wedding-Pack.pdf
